In partnership with The Art Renewal Center, Sum & Substance (Cauliflower Moon Rising) was curated into a project called The Lunar Codex. Founded by Samuel Peralta, art images will be laser-etched on nickel microfiche and/or digitized on terabyte memory cards and enclosed in a series of time capsules, launched by SpaceX and placed on the Moon in perpetuity. Works of over 30,000 Contemporary Artists, Writers, Musician, & Filmmakers from 162 countries & 67 Indigenous nations will be included.
At its essence the Lunar Codex is a set of time capsules, a message-in-a-bottle to future generations - “a museum on the moon.”
Images of Sum and Substance (Cauliflower Moon Rising) will be included in both Codex Nova, scheduled to launch February 14, 2024 targeted for a landing in the Moon’s southern polar region, and Codex Polaris, with a tentative launch in Fall 2024, targeting the noble crater in the vicinity of the Lunar South Pole.
It will be the first significant placement of contemporary arts on the Moon in 50 years.
